1923 Seagrave Fire Engine Restoration

For San Luis Obispo County Historical Society

In 2007, the Hind Foundation granted $5,000 to the San Luis Obispo Fire Fighters Association for the restoration of the City’s 1923 Seagrave Fire Engine. The SLO County Historical Society and the SLO City Fire Fighters Association formed a partnership to restore the City of San Luis Obispo’s first motorized fire engine. Every piece of the fire engine has been restored to its original state – from each bolt to the gold leafing detail.

Noteworthy Outcomes
•    Heritage Restored

Many members of community took pride in contributing to the engine’s restoration. This engine was the first departure from horse-drawn fire engines, an investment that moved the City’s Fire Department into the modern age.

•    Educating the Community
The restored engine is a successful tool for educating our community by illustrating the evolution of firefighting technology.
