Hospice Supportive Music Program

For Hospice Partners of the Central Coast

In 2011, the Hind Foundation granted $150,000 to the Hospice Partners of the Central Coast to support one music therapist for three years in their Supportive Music Program. The music program is part of the Hospice’s holistic approach to serve children and adults dealing with grief, or a life threatening or terminal illness. Music therapists travel throughout the community to provide sessions for patients and families in their homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals. The therapists create a calming meditative environment that can aid in relaxation, anxiety relief and pain management. Instruments that have proven to be especially effective in this work are the harp, guitar, flute and Native American flute.

Noteworthy Outcomes
•    Reduced Need for Medication
The Supportive Music Program is so effective in the reduction of anxiety, depression and even pain that the overall use of medication in Hospice care has been reduced by almost 40%.

•    National Expansion
The Hospice Partners Music Support Program has been so successful that there is now an effort for developing a national certification program to certify/educate musicians for similar programs. The certification program should be up and running within two years.
