Hind Foundation Networking

Library for Every Generation

For Friends of the Cambria Library

In 2012, the Hind Foundation awarded $140,000 to Friends of the Cambria Branch Library to support their new 5,800 square foot library. Per capita the Library is one of San Luis Obispo County's most heavily used libraries. Serving a rural area of approximately 1,800 square miles with over 8,000 North Coast residents, it is the only public library between Big Sur, CA and Cayucos, CA. According to public library standards, the original 2,331 square foot library, first occupied over 30 years ago, was less than one-half the size needed to support the area population. The new building provides a direct and immediate benefit to the Library's current programs by nearly doubling its collection, adding public computer work stations, having flexible multi-use spaces, increasing parking, and improved ease of access.

Noteworthy Outcomes

  • Dedicated Volunteers
Since 1991, the Friends of the Cambria Library have donated 350 volunteer hours every month to keep the Cambria Library open, staffed, and stocked and matched County funds to open a larger facility. Through countless fundraisers, sacrifice and dedication, they made this dream come true.
  • Loyal Customers
With 4,800 cardholders (662 of them are children), the Library handles 100,876 individual checkouts annually, responds to 720 Librarian assistance inquiries every month, and provides 300 hours of Internet use monthly.
  • Strategic Planning
Though the new building more than doubles the Library's size and capacity, the new operating model means the library will require only a small increase in staffing to meet added demand.
