Montgomery Woods SNR Land Acquisition
For Save the Redwoods League
In 2007, the Hind Foundation provided a $150,000 matching grant to Save the Redwoods League towards the acquisition of three properties (totaling 380 acres) to be transferred to the Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve. Prior to conveying the project to the Forest Service the League organized the removal of old structures and helicoptered out their debris to restore the land to its natural state. This land acquisition expands the protection of ancient redwoods, improves the protection and restoration efforts for the Big River watershed, and will enhance opportunities for the public to visit. The Reserve started with a 9 acre donation by Robert Orr in 1945, and has been enlarged to 2,743 acres by purchases and donations since them.
• Habitat Preservation
The addition of these properties will enhance the Big River watershed protection and ancient redwoods, as well as provide a protected ecosystem for species, such as peregrine falcons and the northern spotted owl.
• Relationship Strengthening
With the success of the Montgomery Woods acquisition the League has become a trusted advocate of the Forest Service and provides a much needed service that the Forest Service couldn’t complete due to a lack of Federal funding.
• Improved Public Access
The addition of facilities and trails will provide greater access to the reserve, which in turn will create a greater appreciation for this fragile ecosystem.
“You couldn’t meet nicer or more enthusiastic people than the Hind family. Thanks to their generous support for the acquisition of an important old-growth redwood property in the Los Padres National Forest, we have strengthened our relationship with the U.S. Forest Service which led to the successful protection of two more redwood properties in southern Big Sur.”

Save the Redwoods League is dedicated to protecting the ancient redwood forests so all generations can experience the inspiration and majesty of redwoods. In 1850, there were nearly 2 million acres of ancient coast redwood forests in California. Today, less than 5 percent remains and faces threats from unsustainable logging practices, poorly planned development and global climate change.
