Old Mission Parish Hall Garden Renovations
For Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
In 2012, the Hind Foundation granted $60,000 to historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa to upgrade, beautify, and enhance accessibility to its garden, courtyard and patio entry. The outdoor renovations were a significant unmet need of the Mission's larger $850,000 project to renovate The Parish Hall, which had not received significant upgrades since 1948. Prior to renovations, the garden area had minimal lighting, chipped and painted walls, failing irrigation, empty planters, and tripping concerns along pathways - all of which lent to a cold and uninspired environment. The new garden area is bright, fresh, and inviting with renewed tile roofs, a new entryway, welcoming adobe block columns and stonework, refreshed outdoor BBQ area, updated landscaping, and improved electrical.
Community Focal Point
Located in Mission Plaza, the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa serves as an iconic structure in Downtown San Luis Obispo. Previously the Parish Hall and Garden reflected an “institutional” character common to hospitals, orphanages and schools of that era. The upgrades provide a more comfortable, welcoming, and flexible space for guests and parish members alike.
With the improvements, the garden area has seen increased use by the public during lunch breaks, educational tours, events, and weddings.
