Secrets of the Kelp Forest

For San Luis Obispo Children's Museum

In 2015, the Hind Foundation granted $19,000 to the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum to renovate its Coastal Cave exhibit into a "Secrets of the Kelp Forest" sensory experience. The Cave highlights the beauty of the local coastal environment, encouraging children's curiosity and love for the sea. It provides a multi-sensory, immersive experience for visitors with a native Live Oak tree framing the opening to the exhibit. Guests step inside onto a colorful bubble-like floor while listening to sounds of whales, birds and surf. They view a living kelp forest and the animals that inhabit it. As one of the first exhibits guests encounter, the Cave has become a striking centerpiece of the Museum and is unlike any other exhibit at any other children's museums in the United States.

Noteworthy Outcomes

  • Stepping Outside The Museum
This project creates a memorable exhibit and experience for visitors of all ages, featuring take-aways with suggestions for local outings (i.e., best place to see tide pools, family friendly beaches, etc.) and serving as a catalyst for robust educational programs.
