"Kohl for Kids" teaching and assessment tools

For Music at Kohl Mansion

In 2016, the Hind Foundation granted $2,500 to assist in consolidating, strengthening and expanding Music at Kohl Mansion's "Kohl for Kids" program with new teaching and assessment tools. "Kohl for Kids" is the organization's 24-year-old music in schools and community outreach program that was founded in 1992 had impacted over 85,000 students through 2015.  The grant supports creation of comprehensive curricula and supplemental instructional materials that are research-based, compliance with music education standards developed by national professional organizations, development of California State Standards tools for assessing student learning. The program aims to reflect the most current thinking on how students experience the performing arts.

"Kohl for Kids" offers a variety of community initiatives, including interactive music-in-schools programs offered in 21 public; 65+ classroom concerts in K-12 schools; coaching and master classes in middle and high school band and orchestra programs; children’s concerts (toddlers through second grade) at Kohl Mansion; free family concerts at the San Mateo Public Library; musical instrument drive for public schools in need; advanced pre-college chamber residency at Kohl Mansion; as well as others.

  • Ahead of the Curve
    In response to dwindling music education programs in the public schools, Music at Kohl volunteers were visionary in creating partnerships with local school districts to bring professional performing artists /educators into the classroom. This was the start of what has become a multi-faceted, far-reaching and diversified program of education and outreach activities today for which demand continues to grow.
