Emergency Equine Feed Outreach

For California Coastal Horse Rescue

In 2011, the Hind Foundation granted $7,500 to California Coastal Horse Rescue (CCHR) to fund their Emergency Equine Feed Outreach. This new CCHR community outreach temporarily pays a portion of the feed for horses of families who have fallen on economically hard times. This outreach effort enables CCHR to save horses by providing owners with the means to keep and care for their horses. The first year goal is to provide assistance for 8 to 10 new horses.

CCHR’s Director assesses each situation, determines the need, and continuously monitors the situation to determine if the recipient’s need changes.  Later, if able, recipients are asked to consider "paying it forward" by donating what they can to help the next horse in need.

Noteworthy Outcomes

  • Maintaining Care
The outreach project keeps horses with their families rather than displacing them and potential putting them at risk of being euthanized because adequate care cannot be found for them.
  • Keeping Families Together
The outreach project also helps keep the horse and their families together rather than exposing them to the heartache and stress of being separated.
