New Irrigation System

For Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

In 2008, the Hind Foundation granted $116,122 to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for phase two of the replacement of the Garden’s antiquated irrigation system. The Garden, founded in 1926, installed the original system during its development and last updated the system in 1960. The new system, a computer-controlled system utilizing data from weather and soil instruments, reduces water consumption and the mortality rate of the Garden’s complex display of over 1,000 taxa of native plants across 40 acres.

Noteworthy Outcomes
•    A National Case Study

Thanks to the additional financial support and recognition of the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens is one of five gardens that will research the viability of centrally controlled automatic irrigation systems for botanical gardens across the country.

•    Water Conservation
The new system conserves water by allowing the garden to have precise control over the amount, location, and timing of water applied.

•    Cost Savings
The new system saves the Garden money by reducing their water costs and the cost it takes to rehabilitate or replace under/over watered species. Additionally, because the system is automated it requires significantly less hands-on supervision from staff.

•    Increased Visibility
The Hind Foundation grant funded the installation of the primary system which led to increased visibility through trade magazines and additional financial support by showcasing the systems efficiency first-hand for other potential supporters.

•    Unexpected Benefit
In May 2009, the irrigation system help save a portion of the Gardens from flames in the Jesusita Fire.
