In 2015, the Hind Foundation granted $150,000 to Save the Redwoods League in support of two significant initiatives, Peters Creek Old-Growth Forest and Boulder Creek Forest, that conserve 359 acres of some of the last remaining old-growth redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The acquisition of Peters Creek Old-Growth Forest includes a 145-acre property adjacent to Portola Redwoods State Park in San Mateo County. The property contains approximately 45 acres of impressive old-growth redwoods and 100 acres of younger mixed-age redwoods, a seasonal waterfall, and beautiful fern walls.
The conservation easement on Boulder Creek Forest includes a 214-acre property adjacent to Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz County. This easement protects the old-growth redwood forest from the threat of logging, development, or subdivision.
Noteworthy Outcomes
- Continuing a Legacy
These projects are a continuation of the work the Save the Redwoods League has been doing to protect redwood forests in this area for more than 40 years.
- Staying Natural
These properties have been a top priority of the conservation community since the 1990’s. Given their proximity to the San Francisco metropolitan area, both properties had faced the very real risk of subdivision and development for estate homes.
